Long Island's Insulation Season, According to a Year of Search Data

Insulation is the least glamorous home upgrade on Long Island — and one of the few with a genuinely predictable season. We pulled twelve months of Google search demand (July 2025 through June 2026) for 25 insulation-related search terms across Suffolk and Nassau County, using Google's Keyword Planner data, to map exactly when homeowners here start caring about it.

The shape of the year

February is the peak — 4,120 searches, 2.4× the June trough of 1,720. The pattern tells a story anyone in the trade will recognize: homeowners don't think about insulation until the heating bills arrive. Demand climbs steadily from October, and the January–February crest lands right when the season's largest utility bills hit Long Island mailboxes.

Then it collapses. March demand falls 43% off the February peak, and by early summer, insulation is the last thing anyone's searching for.

The irony in the timing

The demand curve is almost perfectly inverted from the ideal buying calendar. The best time to insulate is before heating season — attics are accessible, contractors have availability, and the work pays back through the entire winter. Instead, the data shows most Long Islanders start looking in the coldest weeks of the year, after the money's already gone up through the roof.

Summer, when demand bottoms out, is arguably the smartest time of all: it's when insulation does double duty, since the same attic upgrade that holds heat in January keeps cooling costs down in July.

What Long Islanders actually search for

Within the category, the breakdown of average monthly demand is lopsided:

• Spray foam insulation — 710 searches/mo (Suffolk 390, Nassau 320): the dominant product interest by a wide margin
• Attic insulation — 530/mo (Suffolk 320, Nassau 210): the dominant location
• Blown-in insulation — 120/mo: a fraction of spray foam's interest, despite being the workhorse for existing attics
• Insulation contractors — 100/mo: few homeowners search for the trade directly; they search for the product first

That last point is worth dwelling on: Long Islanders research materials, not contractors. The homeowner journey starts with "is spray foam worth it," not "insulation company near me" — which means most buying decisions are being shaped long before anyone picks up the phone.

What this means for your house

• If you insulate between April and September, you're moving against the crowd — and ahead of the bills that send everyone else searching in February.
• Suffolk out-searches Nassau on every insulation term — consistent with its larger stock of older, oil-heated homes further from the city.
• Spray foam curiosity far outruns spray foam knowledge. It's the right answer in some assemblies and the wrong one in others; the search interest suggests plenty of homeowners are getting their education from marketing rather than building science.
